Tamekichi Mitsui – Preserving the Legacy of Traditional Kutani Ware
Tamekichi Mitsui is a distinguished Kutani Ware artist dedicated to preserving and carrying forward the painting styles of Ko-Kutani, the earliest form of Kutani Ware, and the Yoshidaya Kiln, one of the most celebrated revival Kutani traditions.
His works are renowned for their vibrant Kutani Gosai (Five Colors)—green, yellow, purple, dark blue, and red. He skillfully employs both the Gosai-de style, which features all five colors, and the Aote (Green Kutani) style, where vessels are richly decorated using four or three colors without red. These brilliant overglaze enamels beautifully capture the essence and elegance of traditional Kutani porcelain.
While inspired by classic Japanese themes such as landscapes, birds and flowers, and the beauty of the changing seasons, Mitsui's creations also possess a refined, contemporary aesthetic. This harmonious blend of tradition and modern design has become one of the defining characteristics of his work.
Tamekichi Mitsui has held numerous solo exhibitions at prestigious department stores throughout Japan, including Kanazawa, Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Kobe, Sapporo, Matsuyama, and Hakata. He continues to research, create, and present innovative overglaze porcelain that brings the rich heritage of traditional Kutani Ware into the modern era, ensuring its beauty and craftsmanship are appreciated by future generations.
